Moments you cannot miss in Spain’s La Liga!

We are currently in the most exciting time of the football season around the world. Who will win the championship, which teams are going to be relegated and who will secure European qualification?

These are the QUESTIONS that supporters are asking as the dust settles and the men are separated from the boys as every moment matters at this stage of the season. I am no different, and my eyes are glued to what is happening in Spain.

I know that I cannot afford to miss a beat. Right now, you have to keep your eyes on the TV screen as SuperSport brings you the stars of La Liga on HD!

Here are some VIDEO highlights of the championship and relegation battles!

In Spain’s La Liga the high quality action and entertainment has not stopped flowing and the BIG focus over the final three games of the season is who will be CHAMPIONS? and which teams will qualify for EUROPE next season?.

Old rivals and arguably the world’s two greatest football teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona are once more in a battle for the La Liga title. Both have played 35 games, both have won 28 of them, but Barca have more draws and are therefore on 87 points followed by Madrid on 85.

Will Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez prove too potent an attack for Madrid to counter, or will Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema pull Madrid through their next three games and win gold?

And it does not end there. Critics who say La Liga is all about Barca and Madrid need to have their eyes checked. Glance directly below them and you see a fierce battle for the UEFA Champions League.

Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla are fighting for UEFA Champions League qualification as Spain’s top three automatically qualify and the fourth-placed club gets into a pre-tournament qualifiers stage.

It is intense in La Liga right now. Don’t miss a beat, you cannot afford to!

Power of the Premier League

Many will say that English football fans are the most passionate supporters you will come across in the Beautiful Game. In many ways I tend to agree!

The power and the passion of the Barclays Premier League has definitely shaped my life in some way.

WATCH how it shaped this fan’s life: http://goo.gl/LUQBLJ

Liverpool was on the menu and I had no choice. My Scottish-born grandfather supported them. My dad too. I grew up in a Durban suburb known for its British influence and strong football flavor. It was also the late 1980s so who else would I have supported, I mean was there even another team on the planet other than Liverpool then?

Can you recall your first encounter and memory of the Premier League?

To recall my first major experience of watching Liverpool brings back some real emotions. It was a Liverpool vs Manchester United classic and for me, as much as the Everton rivalry is truly special, it is always beating the Red Devils that brings the most satisfaction.

In the year 2000 I experienced a significant victory for Liverpool over United. Danny Murphy’s curling free-kick sealed the deal and Liverpool went on a five-match winning streak over their rivals.

Passion, drama, quality football! This is what I will remember fondly of this experience. But also the absolute commitment of the fans. The supporters love their clubs in England and stay with them in ups and downs, showing a right example of how to really support!

I was able to follow my football passion into the workplace where I began as a young sports reporter at South Africa’s Kick Off Soccer Magazine and spent 11 years there, which included editing the magazine during some of its golden moments.

The job afforded my opportunities to watch international tournaments, international matches in South Africa and in other countries as well as cover the FIFA World Cup live in my home country.

But the power of the English Premier League always carries a significant place in my memory bank of football matches and cultures along my journey.

Now who wants to go and watch a LIVE Barclays Premier League match?

Progress made, target reached!

Around one month ago, I drew a line in the dirt to reach a short term target set by my physiotherapist Theo Calligeris at the Sport Science Institute in Cape Town. I have done it, and remain on track for the big target!

The overall target is to get fully fit again to play sport and run races, but the short-term goal (set 4/5 weeks ago) was to strengthen my calf muscle after a ruptured Achilles tendon injury picked up at 5 -a-side soccer one year ago, and make sure I could start running by this week.

I’ve enjoyed the extra motivation to #MakeItHappen from Lumia and with the help of my physio, I’ve been given the green light to start running for the first time in one year!

It has been a year of patiently, and I mean Patiently, going through the careful processes of the recovery needed for an Achilles tendon rupture. You HAVE to respect the process, take your time and listen to the professional advice. More so with this tendon than any other. It is a SLOW and careful rehab process.

A month ago, my weaker calf muscle was 1cm smaller than the good leg. I have halved that deficit now and I am running on a treadmill (As you can see above). My physio is happy with the tendon, saying it has healed very well.

He is also happy to say the calf muscle has grown and things are looking good. I have four weeks to run on the treadmill before hitting the grass and then the road for my first 10km race in more than a year.

I’ve been helped a lot by the fitbit flex and the app, which has challenged me to reach 10 000 or more steps daily. I have managed that almost every day. My muscle has grown, my tendon has repaired well and I have stayed motivated and in the gym regularly.

I have a new pair of running shoes, camel pack, gym equipment, light weights, swimming goggles and trunks, which have all helped me stay motivated to train hard at the gym or at home. At home I stocked up on healthy food items to help me trim down by 5 kgs, and I am on track with that goal too.

Injury, what injury? Lumia #MakeItHappen

I DO NOT enjoy New Year’s resolutions or To Do lists, but like most people I do want to make changes and complete a challenge. So I have learnt that it helps to be held accountable for completing a challenge, and not taking on too much at once.

If you can relate, then please read on. In 2015, Lumia has encouraged South Africans to actually stick to their goals by committing to any small challenge that gets you a step closer to your target.

So I have committed to putting in place a plan to get myself fit and strong to play sport again. After a very tough 2014 year where I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing 5-a-side soccer I am on my way to full recovery. I have been with a top physiotherapist at the Sports Science Institute and I’m on the home straight, BUT first I have a few targets to reach before I can get back to normal exercise or team sport, let alone kick a soccer ball again!

10690340_942821325735401_4608296152169341544_n

I have to build a set amount of muscle on my weaker leg before I am allowed to run again. So it is gym work, then I have to learn to jog again, before gradually speeding up my runs. All of this under the careful eye of my physio who is getting me ready to run, hike, box and potentially even kick a soccer ball around one day again!

I’d love to share my experience with you along the way, and I’d love for you to pledge, and share your progress with me too.

Check out the Lumia #MakeItHappen video to find out how to make your pledge:

SO WHAT NEXT? If you want to commit to that goal you’ve been putting off for years, you can make it happen with Lumia right now. Lumia will also be giving away a Lumia 535 every week, so if you’re lucky, you could win by submitting your resolution!
